The 5 Best DLC of 2024 and What’s Left to Come (2024)

The year 2024 delivered record-breaking game expansions that elevated some of the most renowned titles to new heights. While naming them all is no small feat, here’s a look at the best DLC and expansions of the year that you shouldn’t miss.

The Best DLC of 2024

While these games are in no particular order, this list simply needs Elden Ring, the Game of the Year in 2022. It had sold 25 million units a few months ago, a testament to its brilliant worldbuilding and active player base.

Although Elden Ring is near perfect as it is, the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC was just phenomenal. You get to travel to the Land of Shadow, face new enemies, and see new sights. While you do have to proceed through trials with caution, you simply have to watch in awe. Shadow of the Erdtree was so impressive that it’s become the first-ever game expansion to be nominated for Game of the Year at The Game Awards—though its inclusion sparked significant debate among fans.

Two of the best DLC of 2024 came from one of last year’s best games, Alan Wake 2. Night Springs, which followed several bizarre mini-stories in classic Twilight Zone fashion, was already a tough act to follow. However, the developers have created a new, compelling horror experience in The Lake House, which was just released in October. If you want to be scared out of your wits, The Lake House also offers some of the creepiest-designed enemies we’ve seen along with a heavy mystery.

The Dawntrail DLC for Final Fantasy XIV also had its moment when it was released during the summer. Creating a new story where players are on a journey to pick the next ruler of Tural has caused a stir. That said, many players are ultimately happy with the newer content. The most recent patch gives you a bang for your buck, including adding new raids, setting up allied society quests and so much more. The rework of the maps and player-versus-player aspects of the game is also exciting for the more experienced gamers.

When discussing DLC, Splatoon 3 needs a special mention. While the third entry in the series arguably didn’t spark the same excitement as previous entries, Side Order has certainly revitalized interest. The choice-based mechanics integrated add a fresh take to Agent 8’s journey. It’s quick to play through and provides some more much-needed story-based content to keep players interested.

MMORPGs also garnered plenty of interest this year, especially with the release of the World of Warcraft: The War Within for the game’s 20th anniversary. While a little rushed in its storytelling, it does hint at a potential redemption arc for the Shadowlands expansion, as there are still many unanswered questions. Future patch updates will likely be the difference.

Another special mention would be the Diablo IV DLC. Vessel of Hatred introduces the Spiritborn, an elite class of strong and agile warriors who use the strength of Spirit Guardians like the Jaguar or Eagle. There are also leveling adjustments and a new difficulty system, which add a layer of suspense and challenge to your playthrough.

What to Expect Soon

These are just a handful of the best DLC of 2024, but there are so many other incredible expansions from this year. However, what’s more important is there is so much more to come from within the gaming space. For example, Age of Empires IV is one of the best titles from 2021. While many think that it has wrapped up, the studio finally provided updates in their patch notes last month.

“We’ve hinted at larger plans and wanted to confirm that the team is working on DLC for 2025. We’ll be sharing more news in the new year so stay tuned!”

Let the speculations and excitement begin!

Another notable game to watch is Astro Bot on PS5. The platformer has made noise over the free Speedrun DLC, which pulls you back into the playroom. Team Asobi’s Studio Director Nicolas Doucet notes about focusing on challenging levels and adding something for players of all levels in an online interview.

Expansion packs take plenty of time to make, but that’s how you know it gets as much love and attention from developers as the base game. Stay on your toes for other DLC in the making.
