Abstract: The invention comprises a phase shifter reset circuit, for phase shifting an input signal, and includes a phase shifter, for shifting the phase of an input signal by a phase determined by a phase shift reference signal and a resetter, for resetting the phase shift reference signal in response to a trigger signal. Also included is a fixed phase shifter for shifting the phase of the input signal by a predetermined phase shift which is connected in parallel with said phase shifter and a threshold detector circuit set to a threshold level which is substantially equivalent to the voltage level required by the phases shifter to produce the same phase shift as is introduced into the input signal by the fixed phase shifter. A bypass circuit is disposed between the phase shifters and the output and includes a switch for selecting a signal from either the phase shifted input signal or said fixed phase shifted signal.

  • Band joining system

    Patent number: 6132541

Abstract: A band joining system including a method of preparing and making a join in a band, a tool for supporting the band when making the join and an attachment for a hot air gun to facilitate making the join. The tool has first and second arms pivotally attached to one another in a scissor type configuration and having first and second guide means associated with the arms for supporting band end regions during the formation of a join. According to the method, band ends are cut in such a fashion that they fit within guide regions of the guide means and supported in a configuration in which the hot air gun attachment may be interposed between the two band end regions supported in the tool, hot air applied to the band end regions and then compressive force used to bring the molten band end regions into contact with one another to form a welded join. The band end regions are cut such that each band end region retains elements of a central reinforcing member, those elements aiding the formation of a strong join.

  • Process for applying chemical papermaking additives to web substrate

    Patent number: 6126784

Abstract: A process for applying a chemical additive, such as a softener, to a fibrous web comprises the steps of: providing a fibrous web having a first side and a second side opposite to the first side; providing a chemical additive; depositing the chemical additive only to the first side of the fibrous web; causing the first side of the fibrous web to contact the second side of the fibrous web thereby partially transferring the chemical additive from the first side to the second side of the fibrous web such that both the first side and the second side of the fibrous web comprise the chemical additive in a functionally sufficient amount. Preferably, the step of causing the two sides of the web to contact comprises winding the web into a roll.

  • Data set backup in a shared environment

    Patent number: 6061769

Abstract: A method of taking a backup copy of a data set, for use with a log, with the data set being open for update by multiple updaters is described. A point on the log is identified (Recovery Time) from which it can be ensured that all data updates identified on the log have been written by an updater from buffers to the data set. This is done by recording a Recovery Time, and then not taking the backup until all the updaters have confirmed that they have written all updates from buffers to the data set. In addition, if tokens are used on the log to avoid having to identify the data set in full, then these are also written to the log before the update is taken.

  • Particulate materials

    Patent number: 5977003

Abstract: A ceramic particulate material which comprises particles having an irregular three dimensional surface profile having jagged projections and a median particle diameter of 200 micrometers or less, the particles being fractals produced by comminution of foamed ceramic material. The material may be such that in a sphere of rotation of the particle, from 30% to 80% of the volume of the sphere is void, the remainder being continuous solid material. The material may be produced by a process which includes providing a suspension of ceramic forming particles e.g., of an aluminosilicate such as clay, in a liquid medium; incorporating a gas in the liquid medium before or after formation of the suspension therein to produce a foamed suspension; extruding the foamed suspension; optionally drying the extrudate formed thereby; calcining the extrudate; and comminuting the calcined material, e.g. by crushing. The material may be used as a substitute for diatomite.

  • Apparatus and method for performing perspectively correct interpolation in computer graphics in a variable direction along a line of pixels

    Patent number: 5777623

Abstract: In an apparatus and method for performing perspectively correct interpolation of texture coordinates in computer graphics, an incremental interpolation technique is used to calculate pixel values along a display line from an associated texture map. In order to evaluate divisions within the hyperbolic equations relating the texture coordinates to pixel position, the incremental technique performs a log subtraction in which the log of the fractional part of a number is looked-up, while the exponent part of the number is tracked separately. The differential of each texture coordinate is tracked. Further, the incremental technique is arranged so as to render the pixels either from left to right or from right to left depending upon which edge of the polygon being rendered is closer to the viewer and hence at which of the polygon edges accumulated errors will be most visible.

  • Adaptive steering control using vehicle slip angle and steering rate

    Patent number: 5684700

Abstract: A method and apparatus are provided for improving vehicle steering in unfamiliar safety critical situations by controlling power steering assist in response to the slip angle of the vehicle and the steering rate of the vehicle. When a vehicle is in a slide or a slide is imminent, the steering wheel should be turned in the direction of the slide to stabilize the vehicle and take the vehicle out of the slide or possibility of a slide. Accordingly, a positive supplemental steering assist is provided for the steering system if the driver is turning the steering wheel in the direction to correct the slide. If, on the other hand, the driver is turning the steering wheel in the direction which will increase the slide, a negative supplemental assist is provided for the steering system.
